“Once upon a time, there was a town… One day a giant fire burned the entire town to the ground.”

SYNOPSIS
Aiden’s ex, Jordan, appears at her apartment, seeking clarity around sexual assault allegations Aiden recently made against Jordan to a mutual friend. Jordan swears to have no idea what Aiden is talking about, but Aiden is unconvinced. Together, they work to untangle the events of a university party years before, attempting to find the truth, hold each other accountable, and figure out what next. Smoke is an urgent, nuanced, and vulnerable provocation, that challenges audiences of all ages’ preconceived notions of justice, trauma, love, and forgiveness.

Run Time: Approximately 90 minutes (No Intermission)

Additional Info For Special performances:

June 21 & 22: Tech Dress Previews. These will have limited audiences and will be used to test technical elements of the production. The show may need to stop and start in the event of a malfunction.

June 25 (2:00pm) & June 27 (7:30pm): Proof of Vaccination Required. Your proof of vaccination and a valid form of government photo ID will be required alongside your ticket.

June 27: Relaxed Performance. Audiences will be welcomed to move around, fidget, leave the theatre as needed to feel comfortable in the space. Some sudden or intense lighting and sound elements will be softened. Proof of Vaccination will be required at this performance.
June 29: Light Night Show. In addition to our 7:30PM, there will be a late night show at 11PM.

June 30: ASL Interpreted Performance. Specific seating will be clearly designated for easy sightline for ASL interpreters.

July 1: Long Table Discussion. Hosted by Louise Casemore.

This production of Smoke was developed with support from the Citadel, Punctuate! Theatre, Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre, the Edmonton Arts Council, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and Canada Council for the Arts.

It originally premiered at Downstage in Calgary, in 2019, and was developed through Nightwood Theatre’s 2016-2017 Write from the Hip Playwriting Unit.
